THE HEART BEHIND THE MISSION: JOHN NG

Discipleship, Missions & The Next Generation

John Ng is an Elder, young adult leader, and pre-marital counselor here at Calvary Old Bridge. He first began attending with his wife Julia thirty years ago. Over the years John has not only gained a deeper relationship with the Lord, but also a heart to serve as well.

One thing that he feels that God has placed on his heart is a burden for discipling the next generation.

He also feels a strong calling for missions. He states “We are all called to missions, one way or another. Jesus in Matthew 28:19-20 commands each of us to be involved in the Great Commission … to make disciples of all nations.”

“The Great Commission is about our community, our nation (local) and all nations (global). It is wrapped around His two essential commandments to us - to love God and to love people.”

John and his wife went on a missions trip to the Philippines in 2024 with Calvary Old Bridge. There, he noticed the great need for more workers in the mission field. “The need for more workers in God’s harvest is always great. So we ought to pray for more workers.” He says.

John offers a few words of encouragement for those who feel the Lord calling them to get involved with missions but don’t know how: “Getting involved in missions doesn’t mean that you will be spending the rest of your life in a remote corner of the world. Missions has many facets. Praying for missionaries and for the people they are reaching is essential.”

“If you are afraid to go, take small steps. Try to go to a local missions effort. Then I would encourage you to go on a week-long missions trip. You will see the contrast of the plenty we have here and the lack they have there. The contrast will make you realize how much you have. I know Jesus is at work throughout the world. And we as believers all need to understand more about His work locally and globally.”

John and Julia will be going on a missions trip with Calvary Young Adults to Peru on September 5-15. John’s hope is that God will impart on our young adults a vision of missions and spread it like wildfire among their friends when they get back. “The early church started spreading the gospel beyond Judea partly due to persecution. I pray that we as the 21st century church does not need persecution to get behind the call of the Great Commission.”
